Springdale News for Sunday, October 2nd
This Sunday is World Communion Sunday, a time when a number of Christian denominations and traditions recognize the idea that, as we say in our Prayer of Great Thanksgiving, in celebrating this sacrament we're united both with Christ, as well as with "all the faithful of every time and place." It's a time to recognize our interconnectedness. One of the ways that we're interconnected is that we're all experiencing the Kingdom of God both as dwelling within, and being part of, God's creation. This Sunday, we'll consider creation care as an important part of our global Christian unity. Our sermon will be based on Luke 17:5-10: The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’” If, at this point, you're wondering just how this particular bit of scripture addresses either the sacrament of the Lord's Supper, or the concept of creation care, then you feel my pain. It's true, even the meal reference in the passage notwithstanding, the connection between this passage and either of those concepts seems a bit tenuous at best. Plus, Jesus' slave reference is a bit dissonant and discomforting to us. This scripture was most certainly used in the past to justify both slavery and our Jim Crow past. But that's not where I'll be going this Sunday. I think there's a broader way to hear Jesus' words here, a way that I believe gets more to Jesus' actual point. And once we get under that surface-level discomfort, then I think there's a connection to our ideas regarding the importance of creation care as part of our Christian faith. I'll admit up front, the connection may be a bit of a stretch, but I think it's a valid one. Will I succeed in making it? You'll just have to come and see, and let me know after the service. I hope to see you then. Music This Week: (please follow the links provided to hear these if you aren't familiar with them) Opening Hymn #637 O Sing to the Lord (Cantai ao Senhor) - This is a familiar song for us all. It's originally a Brazilian song, which was translated first into Spanish and then into English. It's a beautiful piece of global Christian music, very appropriate for World Communion Sunday. Follow the link for a church singing it in a style maybe more in keeping with its Brazilian origins. Response Hymn #743 O God, you Are My God (Step by Step) - When Glory to God was being compiled, its editors searched for, and wanted to include some of the best selections of "praise music" within the hymnal. This was one of their selections, and with good reason. Its melody is accessible and melodic, and the lyrics are heartfelt and reflect a number of scriptural passages. Anthem - We Believe (Adult Choir) Sermon Hymn #713 Touch the Earth Lightly - In keeping again with our emphasis on the global nature of Christianity, this hymn originated in New Zealand; "Touch the earth lightly; use the earth gently" is actually an Austrian aboriginal saying. Offering Music - Come As You Are (Praise Team) Communion Hymn #505 The Trumpets Sound, the Angels Sing - We did this Communion Hymn in the 9:00 service recently, but I don't think it's familiar to the "11:00 people."It's a joyful song written by Graham Kendrick and its fun, rhythmic melody and celebratory lyrics have combined to make it extremely popular worldwide. Here's a link to the song being performed at the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey in England by Kendrick and his band. I predict that you'll enjoy it, and that it will soon become a favorite of yours, too. Closing Hymn #390 Praise, Praise, Praise the Lord! - And another example of great global Christian music - this time, originating in Cameroon, and originally in French. Here's a link to a church singing this tune, first several times in French, and finally shifting into English. We'll sing it in English on Sunday, but I suppose if you know French and would like to sing the French lyrics in the hymnal, you're encouraged to do so. :) Sending Hymn #80 You Shall Go Out with Joy (The Trees of the Field) - Concluding our global emphasis, I think you'll find that the tune of this hymn has hints of Jewish/Yiddish traditional music. It's fun, it's lively, it's energizing us as we leave the service - and note that, as the Praise Team will lead, it includes places to clap your hands. Come on, you can do it! If you'd like to be part of these upcoming classes, contact me or the church office. In order to make your stewardship efforts as easy as possible, Springdale offers online giving on our website and automatic transfer of funds. For an authorization form or information, contact the church office - 425-1760. An even easier option is to simply set up a regularly scheduled automatic payment to the church, as you might do for your cable/internet service or other recurring charges, through your bank's online/mobile banking feature. Food Pantry Donations Springdale is glad to be a supporter of the Portland Avenue Presbyterian Church's Food Pantry. Look for the shopping cart in our Gathering Space, which is where we collect items to contribute. Springdale News for Sunday, September 25th Did you think we'd forgotten you this week since the email wasn't out around lunchtime on Thursday? Not a chance! It's just been very busy around the office here as of late, and I didn't get this completed until later in the day on Thursday. In any case, this Sunday, our sermon will be based on Luke 16:19-31: ‘There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.” But Abraham said, “Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.” He said, “Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.” Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.” He said, “No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.” He said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” ' This isn't one of the Jesus most well-known or referred to parables. Sermons based on this parable often focus on the issue of money - the comparison of the financially rich and poor. That's absolutely a major aspect that Jesus is teaching about. But the issue goes beyond only money. I believe the parable is also about the issue of living our lives with the peace and justice that God created us for and intends us to know and enjoy. One thing that I noticed as I read this parable this week is that, contrary to my memory and assumptions about what's actually written into the story, there's really no indication that the rich man had ever consciously mistreated the poor man in any way that may have caused his punishment in the story. In fact, there really isn't any indication that he and Lazarus had ever even personally met. They were just living out their respective lives in the reality of their two very different circumstances. It's certainly no secret that this very issue is a major point of discussion and debate within our current culture. In social justice discussions, whether within the church or otherwise, we often consider overt, intentionally hostile acts of injustice that need to be addressed. But we also consider the much more subtle forms of injustice in the world - those passive, subconscious, or institutional/systemic forms, which are arguably more damaging and dangerous than the intentionally hostile acts of individuals. Is there, in fact, a parallel between this story and the conversation happening between, for example, whites and blacks in our current society, and the issues and concerns experienced by both? I think there is, and we'll touch on that a bit this Sunday. I hope to see you then. Our mailing address is: Springdale Presbyterian Church 7812 Brownsboro Road Louisville, Ky 40241 Springdale News for Sunday, September 18th This Sunday, our sermon will be based on Luke 16:1-13: Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” These words of Jesus can be troubling. As you read through this, it certainly sounds like Jesus is praising the man who cheated his boss in order to save his own skin. The boss had accused him of cheating him and was going to fire him, and based on the scheme that the man comes up with, it would appear that the accusation was likely true. Because of the uncertain territory of the story itself, a lot of times sermons based on this text will gloss over the story and jump to the end - the punchline, as it were, that no one can serve two masters; you can't serve God and wealth. I've done that in the past, too. This time, though, we'll at least think about what Jesus may actually be getting at in the story itself, and then, maybe how it ties into the punchline - and ultimately, what it might mean for us. Oh, what's the deal with the shoes? I guess you'll just have to show up on Sunday morning and find out. Hope to see you then. :) Music This Week: (please follow the links provided to hear these if you aren't familiar with them) 9:00 Service Gathering Music - God of Wonders Opening Song - Come As You Are Sermon Hymn #741 - Guide My Feet Offering Music - Be Thou My Vision Communion Hymn #53- - One Bread, One Body Sending Song - All to Us 11:00 Service Prelude - Be Still, My Soul - Prepare your hearts and souls for worship as Denise plays this favorite of the faith. Opening Hymn #174 Come and Seek the Ways of Wisdom - Church music is never created in a vacuum; it's always picked up tunes and rhythms that resonate and are common in society at the time they're written. This is a relatively new hymn, and Glory to God is the first Presbyterian hymnal to include it. Musical theater fans will quickly recognize a common strand between this hymn and a well-known Broadway favorite. Response Hymn #582 Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me - This is another one that's new to us in Glory to God, a bluesy-jazzy version of the classic Gloria Patri. At my previous congregation, we liked this one so much that it became our go-to weekly "Gloria" after the Assurance of Pardon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Here's a very nice version of it for you to listen to - just a tad slower than we used to do it, but still an excellent rendition. Sermon Hymn #741 Guide My Feet - Here's a beautiful version of this familiar hymn, performed by the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn Offering Music (Adult Choir) - You Are My God (with Holy, Holy, Holy) Doxology #643 Now Thank We All Our God - The First Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska has a world-class music ministry; I'll share their videos in these weekly emails often. Here, they offer a stirring, well-orchestrated rendition of this favorite hymn standard, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. As an aside, did you know that JSB was a firm believer in reincarnation? In fact, on his deathbed, his last words, uttered in his thick German accent, were, "I'll be Bach..." ;) Sending Hymn #547 Go, My Children, with My Blessing - This simple, beautiful tune is a favorite of many. Here's an excellent performance of it by our friends at First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Postlude - Halle, Halle, Hallelujah - listen to Denise's exquisite performance of this beautiful piece of music as we close the service. Online, Direct Deposit, and Online/Mobile Giving Options for financially supporting the church other than dropping something into the traditional offering plate are quickly becoming the norm for many people. In order to make your stewardship efforts as easy as possible, Springdale offers online giving on our website and automatic transfer of funds. For an authorization form or information, contact the church office - 502-425-1760. Currently, there is a need for: canned fruit/vegetables, peanut butter, tuna, cereal, rice, or macaroni and cheese; and personal items such as shampoo, toothpaste, dish soap, deodorant, laundry soap, DIAPERS, etc. Also needed: clothing for children and men, and especially linens and bath towels. We hope you'll be a part of this important part of our mission efforts. Food Truck Fridays! What a neat idea! Our friends at Harvey Brown Presbyterian, 311 Brown's Lane, are currently holding monthly events called Food Truck Fridays. The final two for the year will be September 16 and October 21. Food from six or more food trucks, beer, soft drinks, and live music are available from 6-9pm. If you've got some spare time on those dates, you might want to swing by and check it out. Springdale News for Sunday, September 11th
This Sunday, our sermon will be based on Luke 15:1-3, 11-32: Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him.And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.’ So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.”’ So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate. “Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on.He replied, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.’ Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, ‘Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!’ Then the father said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.’”(NRSV) Historically, this has been called The Parable of the Prodigal Son, although in more recent times it's also become known as The Parable of the Man with Two Sons, or The Parable of the Prodigal and His Brother. Whatever you call it, it's certainly one of the most well-known of Jesus' parables, as well as one of the most depicted in art throughout the centuries (and for the record, yes, church nerds out there, I know I'm playing a little fast and loose with the Revised Common Lectionary here). Stories from scripture often yield different flavors and outlooks when viewed and experienced through the eyes of different characters in the story, and this parable is no exception. What relevant issues come through when looking through the eyes of the younger son? The father? The older son? I've also heard sermons inspired by the hypothetical thoughts of the mother, who is never actually mentioned in the text. But in addition to hearing and seeing the story - especially a parable - from the vantage point of the various characters, there are other things that color how we understand it. Our minds fill in missing details that aren't actually there. As you read this parable, I invite you to do it slowly, as if it's the first time you've ever heard it. Are there details about the story that you'd assumed were in the text but actually aren't? What "brushstrokes" of your own have you added to this word-painting, maybe without even thinking about it? And parables are meant to be allegorical or metaphorical - the characters and situations actually represent something broader than the literal expression of the story. So a big part of the message we get out of a parable hinges on who, or what, we assume each of the characters and situations in the story represent. For example, almost any time Jesus tells a parable that includes a father figure, we've been trained to assume that the father figure represents God, and other character assignments start to flow from that assumption. But how might the meaning or message of the parable change if we chose to use a different color, or brush, for those "brush strokes" that we use to fill in the missing elements? And how might the meaning change if we assume that the characters in the story represent someone or something other than our default assumptions? This Sunday's sermon will play with that idea a little bit. Intrigued? I hope so - and I hope to see you Sunday, to see how that all plays out. Its simple tune and deeply moving lyrics have touched the hearts of so many people, in times of both joy and sorrow. And is there any musician who hasn't recorded a version of it? PYC Walk for Hunger Please help support our PYC as they participate in the 2016 Hunger Walk, to benefit the Dare to Care Food Bank. We have a great group of youth, and we should all be proud that they're committing to be part of this important part of eliminating hunger and food insecurity in Louisville. One in six families here in Kentuckiana struggle for the food they need to be healthy, and all of you can help make a difference. Let's all give the PYC our moral support and encouragement. But let's also remember that you can't write a check on moral support. Please, if you're financially able to do so, go to the team page, by clicking here , and make a financial contribution to help them meet their goal of raising $500 for the food bank. One Worship Sunday - 11:00 a.m. On more Sundays than not, the weekly sermon in most congregations will be based on the Gospel Lectionary text. This Sunday, the Gospel text is Luke 14:25-33 - which is a prickly text that will make a lot of preachers double-check the other Lectionary texts for the day, to see if they might preach on one of them, instead of this one: Now large crowds were traveling with [Jesus]; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.(NRSV) Yeah, so now you see why preachers might want to shy away from this one. Honestly, from the standpoint of preaching, this Sunday's Old Testament text from Jeremiah is a nice slow pitch right over the plate that a number of really good sermons could be, and have been, given. But far be it from us to take the easy path (at least this Sunday; I reserve the right to do so on other days ;) ) - we're still going to look at the gospel text this week. Jesus' words here are stark - harsh, even. When we read these words and imagine Jesus saying this to his followers all of this, we can end up feeling a bit like Joe Pesce in the film "My Cousin Vinnie" (click the picture below): We can imagine the apostle Peter cringing and pulling Jesus aside, as he did in another instance, warning him that his words were a bit to "out there" and could hurt the brand, as it were - you just don't say these kinds of things if you want to retain and grow membership in the movement. So really, what is going on here? Jesus is talking a lot here about sacrifice, realigning one's priorities to put following him, and living as people of the Kingdom of God, ahead of everything - even to the point, as he put it of "hating" even the most beloved people or things in our lives. What do you think about this passage? Clearly, most people would say that Jesus is using hyperbole, using extreme language to make a more general point. But it's just as clear that many times, in an attempt to make this story more palatable to us, we can go too far in the opposite direction over-softening Jesus' words and in the process, tossing out an important part of his teaching. The one thing that this text is guaranteed to do is to make all of us focus on our own personal priorities in life, and how and where our faith fits into those priorities. I know I'll be doing the same as the sermon comes together. Hope to see you Sunday. In our tradition, participation in this sacrament is open to all who trust in the name of Jesus Christ, regardless of church membership or denominational/traditional affiliation, and regardless of whether you have questions, doubts, or uncertainties in your faith. This is the Lord's Table, not ours, and you are welcome to it. At the 11 a.m. service our practice is to hold the bread and cup until all have been served. We will then eat and drink together to symbolize our unity in Jesus Christ. Please help one another pass the trays. If you would like to partake from a larger cup or receive gluten-free bread, please motion to the server with the large cup. Spiritual Nurture This Sunday (and beyond)

Let's all get our cards registered and make use of this really good program. Recycle Your Old Eyeglasses Get a new eyeglass prescription lately? Remember that you can donate those old glasses that don't work for you, and get them in the hands of someone that they'd be perfect for. Look for the box in our Gathering Area where you can drop off your old glasses, and help give the gift of improved eyesight to someone in need.
